'01 F-150 No brake/rear turn signals

Just found out my rear lights are out, The high-mounted brake light works, but no brake or turn signals. Looked through some other threads, and checked the MFS. We found 2 wires on the connector that aren't staying in place in the connector.

What are you able to do to keep the contact pins in the connector?? Is it easier to change out the connector, but isn't too much space in there to reconnect everything.

Any solutions will be appreciated at this point...

Thanks

You can use hot melt glue.

I was thinking thick gel Super Glue might work, and it would set quickly.

Well, the problem with superglue is if you have take it apart. With hot melt, it is easier to remove.

Up to you.

I've whittled down little wedges of a soft wood to reinforce pins whose locking tab have broken or have otherwise failed.

I would definitely not use any sort of cyanoacrilate adhesive as it may migrate and end up either insulating the connection or permanently gluing the connector to the switch.

I guess I could use a toothpick and HOPEFULLY it will break off flush with the connector.

I've got the original manual, and have seen some of the other threads, as this seems to be a fairly common problem.

Still Not Working

I purchased a new MFS connector & pigtail from RockAuto and switched out the connector on advice from a friend who is a technician for a local Ford dealer. Numbered and took pictures of wiring & harness before replacement. 3 wires slipped right out of connector since latches were gone. Reattached switch and still no rear lights.

Could the MFS itself be gone, we checked all fuses in system, all look good. If the brake switch was out is shouldn't affect the marker lights and emergency flashers, should it??

Only other option right now would be the MFS, correct??

TOTALLY STUMPED!!!!

ANY help would be appreciated!!!!

You could get a DMM and ohm things out. See if there is any abnormalities.

You need to get your meter or test light out and make a few tests. Otherwise, all you're doing is guessing.

Update, Sort Of

Got home from work and checked the lights in the dark. To my amazement, the rear lights came on, markers lights for sure. Tried the hazard flashers and everything went out. I went out a bit later, more optimistic, lights came on again, checked the brake lights, and that's when I think they went out again.

This is telling me a couple of things:
  • I have power to the rear lights.
  • It's not blowing fuses.
  • Will have to narrow down between brake switch & multi-function switch.
  • Know that the MFS connector is new and all the wires are staying in place.
My only thought is if the brake switch is bad, can I test jump connector contacts to bypass the switch to eliminate it from the circuit??

It being a 2001 truck it's been hard to find GOOD wiring diagrams to follow the trail.

Manual Downloaded

Thanks for the link to the manual. Took a while to get everything opened up, but it looks real promising.

Have to get back out & check again, looks like the system finally did blow a fuse. The lights came back on the one time but that's it. I'm pretty sure all the wires went back into the connector in the right slots. I numbered everything before R/R, so I just want to make a little jumper and bypass the MFS, to see if it's the switch definitely.
