Help with transfer case

I have a 1997 f150 4x4. 4.6 with esof.

A couple of weeks ago when I tried to use the 4wd it would not engage. I wouldn't make a noise and 4x4 light would not come on. I tested the fuses and switch and all seemed good. I got a deal on a shift motor so I went ahead and purchased. When replacing the shift motor the indicator on the transfer case was pointing to 4H so I manually switched it over to 2wd. After I stalling the new shift motor I still could not get 4wd to work.

Today while driving home I noticed a humming like noise that was very concerning. When at spress above 40 a few times it made a loud bang. I limped it home. I decided to remove the shift motor to see what the indicator showed and it was back in 4H. The wheels are not actually in 4h. But the transfer case is( atleast according to the dial on the back of the transfer case). Problem is I can not even move the dial over to 2wd now, it will not move.

Am I screwed? Did I blow up the transfer case? Is there anyway to verify that is even the issue and not my tranny? Both could be catastrophic. The truck is 20 years old and has 120,000 on it.

Thanks anyone who can offer any advice.

The loud bang is concerning. I would get it towed to a shop and have them start taking things apart.

That noise was probably something inside of the transfer case.
