1997 F-150 4low

Does anyone know why my truck goes into 4low by itself? I've taken the transfer case motor off and manually turned it into 2h, turned the motor and put it back on and it went into 4h when I started it
even though the switch was in 2h. I drove it down the driveway and it went back into 4low. It has the switch on the dash for 4x4.

The GEM module is causing the motor to run.
Check to see if the module is corroded from a leaking windshield.
It is located behind the dash fuse panel.
In lue of doing that, take the case motor fuse out until you get the cause fixed.
Good luck.

Replaced the GEM with a refurbished one, now no electronics will work does it need to be programmed? I work at a chevy dealership so i can get it programmed at the ford store at a discount if it needs it.

It needs the program for your vehicle as it is equipped.
A dealer normally accesses the Ford data base with your VIN, then the correct program is down loaded and installed for your application.
The module is sort of universal but not every vehicle is equipped with the same options, hence the name General Electronic Module.
Good luck.
