Post Input and Advice Upgrades on a 99

I'm new to this forum so take it easy please.

I've got a 1999 super crew lariat with the 5.4 in it. I've had a little bit of exhaust work done to it, however it is mostly bone stock. Id sure like to get more power from the truck and more sound from the exhaust. I've got a few ideas for what I want to do to the truck, but would love to hear all suggestions.

The exhaust work that has been done is a Single 2.5 inch pipe from the cat to the back at a 90 degree turn behind the rear wheel. It has a flow-master 40 on it. Sadly, Its not much louder than stock. My thoughts on this are a high flow cat, and shorty headers. I don't know a whole lot about those, so any advice, or brand suggestions would be appreciated. To go along, new carb parts, fuel injectors and a cold air intake will probably be added.

The head lights are fogged up. I would like some sleek halos, however most reviews on those turn out to be bad due to fogging issues. Any suggestions on reliable brands?

I'm going to put a lift on the truck (a few months down the line). I'm fairly set on a rough country 5 inch suspension lift and 3 inch body lift paired with 35-36 inch tires. However I cant seem to find any gap fillers to fill the gap where the frame will be separated from the cab and box. On top of that, I don't know what other parts may need upgraded. U joints? Any input is appreciated.

Finally, my fog lights don't work... They are plugged in and seem to be all connected properly, however I haven't figured out how to turn them on. I suspect they might be burnt out or something, however I don't have a way to test them. Any input?

My truck: 1999 f150 supercab lariat flare side 4x4 with the 5.4 trition.

Thanks for the help!

If your fogs are factory, turn the head lights on then pull the switch out. As for exhaust I have a 4.6 with dual 2.5 inch with x pipe and dual obx r mufflers. Magnaflow 11 inch bodies also work great. As far as headlights go look on ebay for eagle eye lightning headlights. Mine came with a 10 year warranty and look great.

Put a true dual from the cats back with X over and flowmasters and it will make a noticeable difference. I did this last year on my 99 that originally had a 2 to 1 flowmaster cat back system. It's nice sounds good and isnt obnoxiously loud. I would skip the high flow cats and did on mine. I couldn't find any reliable info that high flows were any better than stock cats for our trucks so I didn't bother. I did notice a difference in power with the new exhaust.

Save yourself some money and just do the gotts mod for the intake. Takes about 20 mins and is really easy. I have never seen a dyno for gotts versus CAI but I suspect it would be pretty similar in results.

Pick up some lightening headlight buckets and markers for it and put good bulbs in it. None of the aftermarket conversions are any good. If you are handy you could always make your own projectors. There are a few threads on the step by step for them and they look nice and put out a lot more light than the stocks do from the pics.

I have a 4" rancho lift in mine and it will fit 35's easily. I have 33's on it now cause Im old and have a hard time getting in it due to messed up knees. If you are planning to off road it much I'd think about skipping the body lift. I say that cause a buddy of mine and I years ago lifted about 40 trucks and jeeps between the two of us and anytime we used a body lift we had issues with them if we hit the trails hard with them pushing the floor boards up. Just my opinion on them.

Good luck with the upgrades!

@10 gt f150, The fog lights don't work when the switch is pulled towards me. However I do like your lights and appreciate the eagle eye suggestion. The warranty is very good.

@bosifus, Thanks for the info on the high flow cats, I had a hard time finding anything as well. I like the gotts mod, It looks simple and easy. I'm glad to hear a 4 inch lift would fit 35s. I'm defiantly going to do the suspension lift, however I may wait on a body. I have heard a lot of bad things about them. Who knows... It might be perfect without one. And thank you!

if you're putting on bigger tires and a lift, then the biggest benefit would be changing the gear set in each axle to like 4:10 ratio. This will give the biggest change to the feel off power in the seat of the pants. Then add a quality tune that can accommodate the gear change and tire size and any future additions . I do have a set of factory fogs that I'm willing to let go & I know they work.

Thanks for the advice. On the re gear, I heard its quite difficult on the front end. The gears have to be backwards or something of the sort. Do you know much about that?

I think for the front you'll need what is called "reverse cut"....Where-ever you get your gears set make sure that they understand this is for a 4x4 and what axles you have.... they should get you the right stuff and labeled accordingly.

A reputable repair shop should have little trouble getting this done.

Thanks! I'm going to do this with the help of some family because the only repair shop around here is a run down place that can hardly change oil.
