Battery light
Battery light
Hi to everyone, I have a question to ask you. I have a 2001 Supercrew that the battery light keeps flashing on and off.I have new alternator that is putting out 14.8 and have had battery checked out and they tell it's ok.Anyone have a idea what else it could be,any help is would appreciate it.thank you
There likely is a problem with the new alternator.
The charge light depends on a ground from the alternator regulator.
If it is lighted with the plug off the alternator, the lead is grounded at some point.
Check for a pin folded over at the alternator.
.
How the system works is when the alternator spins above a certain RPM and begins to output, the regulator detects this and 'un-grounds' the light lead as an indication the system is working.
The absolute voltage at the battery normally depends on the state of battery charge.
If the regulator is faulty it could go high at 15+ and cook the electrolyte out in short order.
This condition puts excessive wear on the brushes, shortens battery life and subjects the rest of the circuits and lighting to too high a voltage.
Good luck.
