I have a 2004 f150 heritage 4.6 2v and planning to swap a 5.4 . can i use a 1999-02 Ford Expedition 5.4 motor or better off with the f150 1999-03 ? im planning to keep my computer stock to make less pain in the *** so i know i will have to get it tune .

I would opt for the 1999+ engine.

99-03 are the same long block, even in the Expy. You can go to 2004 with an Expy 2v replacement and up to 2009 using a 5.4 from a E series van. The engine long blocks are the same. Also, 04 and up have the 8-9 threads for the spark plugs, so the plugs blowing out are a thing of the past.

Making a 5.4 upgrade takes a bit of work and some challenge. You need to make sure the engine you get has the right flywheel assembly on it, and convertor to accept the power conversion from 4.6 to the 5.4. One has a 2.3 ratio and one uses a 1.9. It must use the be correct tc or you will chew up your trans and possibly destroy more driveline items.

Currently I have an 04 Expy 5.4 on a stand that I'm checking out before stuffing into my 98 fs. It's harder to go backwards with this motor, but in your case, I have a number of options to use. I have run every possible scenario that could hinder me, and I'm more than confident that I have every swap part needed, just in case.

There is a big write up on another forum, I'm a member of, and it really breaks this swap down quite well. Also, since you have an 04, you will need to get the latest engine, or you will have to replace the intake manifold with yours and some other pieces. EGR tubes, etc.

Yes on keeping your computer. You will have to have the 5.4 codes flashed into it to run correctly. At least you keep your theft and PATS. Too many have problems when they switch and can't figure out that they are programmed together, speedometer cluster included. If it were me, I'd be checking the local Ford guys and see who will or can program you flash, ahead of time, to keep the down time to a minimum if you need it's use. Good luck.

I don't think the 04 Heritage used the 04+ electronic throttle, remember the Heritage was built using leftover 03 parts.
