1997 f150 stuck in 4 wheel drive

Automatic with **** on dash. Put it in 4 wheel low today and it won't come out now. I tried backing up trick and not working. I read I could manually put it back in2wd but not sure how. I need to get back on road to work. Don't care about 4wd now just need it in 2wd. anyone know how to do this?

you have to take the T case shift motor off at back of T case. 4 - 10 mm bolts and then you can use a 8mm wrench to turn selector on T case to 2H. you might have to hook t case motor to hot leads from battery to rotate back to 2H position just had to do that to my truck not too long ago

I hate to be stupid but I'm not a mechanic but I'm smart enough to do this. Does the truck need to be jacked up or can I reach it from under truck? So I understand , once motor is removed I will see the selector right? Just curious was yours caused by the motor or something else? I really appreciate your help

truck does not have to be jacked up. and yes once removed you will see the selector rod and its labeled so just use 8mm wrench and turn it clockwise to 2H. mine was stuck in 4 low from what started as a bad T case shift motor and im still working on getting it working again , now its electrical.

I might be mistaken, but doesn't the transmission have to be in neutral to shift IN AND OUT of 4x4 low?

Did the OP try this, I see he mentioned trying the "backing up trick". Just want to be sure he didn't miss something simple

So.. just to be clear. It doesn't need to be in neutral while I put it back in 2wd manually

J Wes Allison, just so I'm clear, you did put your truck in neutral while running with your foot on the brake to try to get it to go back into 2 hi?
I just don't want you to tear into the transfer case if you really don't need to.

Also is it cold where you are (you don't list your location)

It's not severely cold except at night. 40s during day . Suppose to be in the 70s tomorrow. I tried the neutral position many times. I'm in Arkansas

Going to do it in a few hours. Had a meeting. Last question though. You said use a 8mm to turn it back to 2wd. I saw there is a triangle looking shaft in pictures. Is that where I use the 8mm to turn back counter clockwise
