97 f150 lariat v8 5.4l triton slips in 4th gear

97 Ford f150 lariat v8 with 5.4l triton motor with 175k mile. Everything works great buy trans slips in 4th gear.
It's this something to be alarmed with or can it be repaired easily and inexpensively.

Would you take a chance on purchasing this truck for 3k?

Appreciate any feedback.

You have not given anything to relate to but the word slipping.
The trans has a working function as follows.
a. In third gear, the converter is still not in lockup so some slip will be present but is purely hydraulic in nature inside the converter. This is normal.
b. As the trans up shifts to Over Drive, the slip is still present for the same reason.
c. The last function is the converter is commanded to do an Electrical hard lock up. In this stage, the engine through the trans has no slippage due to the converter lock up.
This can all be observed by watching the action of your Tachometer if you have that option in the dash.
All this occurs above about 45 mph. Under this speed no lock up occurs unless you switch out OD, then lock up may occur in third gear.
.
Another trans action that most don't notice is at normal speeds in OD, the throttle is lifted and brakes applied, the converter will unlock for about 5 seconds then lock up again if throttle is reapplied. You can see this happening by looking at the Tach action.
This is normal and done for a specific reason.
Now you see why just saying slipping is not enough to tell if you have an issue.
Good luck.
