Miss fire cynd. #1

I have a 1998 xlt 4.6 with 299,195 miles. Just last night while driving home, I had a p0301, code and antifreeze all over the ground on the passenger side. The truck never got hot. I've researched and researched and the more I read, the more I get confused. I'm replacing the spark plug, the old one had a hint of antifreeze on it. Any ideas where to start? Any and all responses would be greatly appreciated.

Wash the engine, taking care not to get ignition components wet - then use a pressure tester to try to find the leak.

Do a compression test on all cylinders then report the readings here. I would guess that you're going to find a blown head gasket but it could be a cracked head or block. I WOULD not start the engine before checking it. If you get coolant in the cylinder and then try to start it you could hydro lock it and bust a piston. Pull all of the spark plugs before turning the engine over. That will prevent hydro locking. Might want to check your engine oil for signs of coolant too. You can also get an adapter that will screw into the spark plug holes and put air pressure into each cylinder one at a time (take off the radiator cap and oil filler cap first). If you get a big air leak out through the radiator then you know that there's a leak between that cylinder and the cooling system. Or you could find the air leaking into the engine block and coming out the oil filler or out trough the head gasket, head or block.

Thank you very much, I didn't read your post before I did anything.i changed the plug and put some antifreeze in it and It looks like it's leaking from the exhaust manifold for the number one cylinder.

I almost made it to the 300,000 mile club. Oh, so close.

Well then, congratulations on getting that many miles out of your truck. Sorry about the issue.

Thank you!! I'll fix it and get rolling again, love this body style, and can argue with 299,000 miles. Thanks again!

After a pressure check , and checking in the daylight, it is leaking from the rear of the motor

Was the engine burning oil? If not, would you just pull the heads and get them rebuilt or go with a reman engine?

It wasn't burning oil. It actually was running quite well. Could it be the heater hose that runs under the intake manifold?

YES! I had this issue on my limo. Some modulars have a metal tube running under the intake and some have a metal and rubber hose. It doesn't explain the misfire though.

I'd find a way to make that last 805 miles!
