So what is my truck really worth?
So what is my truck really worth?
In this neck of the woods used truck prices are coming down as the market is slowly becoming saturated once again. As of a year ago KBB said my truck was worth about $7k. Since then it has dropped more than $ 1k.
The odds of coming across a truck like mine in Ohio that is as close to mint as mine inside and out is slim to none. Does this mean the truck is still only worth $6k? If not, what is it realistically worth?

glc is correct, your mods won't add value unless you can find a private party that really digs what you've done and is willing to pay what you want.
Around Wi most dealers/ Banks use the NADA price guide for values. Generally you won't even get that out of a vehicle as a trade in. The best bet if you're going to sell and you want more is a private party sale.

A nice clean truck will be priced by a dealer on their lot at way above book retail. They can take trade-ins and finance their vehicles so they can usually sell for higher prices than an individual. Add to that the fact that Banks typically won't finance an older vehicle and you have to find someone who has cash. It takes time and patience to sell a vehicle yourself but you can do it. Back in the day, i bought and sold lots of vehicles that interested me. Then my state started charging sales tax on used vehicle sales and it added to the cost so I slowed down. It was almost like a disease with me! Ha!
I would sell it outright. I'm not saying the mods make it worth a lot more, my point is that a really clean, straight, rust free truck that you can't find in this part of the world. I know a dealer would go by the book, but is that all most private party folks would be willing to pay?
When I bought my current truck the dealer wouldn't give me what I thought my previous truck was worth as a trade in, so since it was paid off I decided to keep it and sell it myself. I was offered $500 as a trade, I figured it was worth three times that if I sold it myself. I didn't try very hard to sell it because it didn't cost me anything to keep it and I liked having a second truck at hand. I ended up getting $1200 for it when I sold it to a buddy.
moral of the story, if you're willing to wait until you find the person who agrees to your price you can get it.
I look at all these turds for sale at dealer lots or craigslist that are newer and no where near the condition of mine. Hard to say what the seller really gets for them, but regardless mine looks like a steal! So if I don't want someone to steal it, what should I try to list it for?

I'm just trying to plan ahead.
I'm also trying to justify in my mind what reasonable would be considering my truck is about as nice as most 2 year old trucks, and does everything about as well minus fuel economy and noise, but is worth about 1/5th. I suppose that even if I did $4k better than KBB value, it wouldn't matter that much in the grand scheme of things.
I know a member put up a truck similar to mine about a year ago for $10k. Not sure what he got for it, but it didn't take long to sell (don't remember who it was). I was hoping others with similar results might chime in.

white elephant, Based on your description of your truck and the low mileage for it's age I don't think there's any reason you couldn't get what you want out of it as long as you're realistic.
You'll never get what you have in it out, that's just the way it goes when there are so many examples still on the road. That said, there's no reason you can't ask 10k and expect 8k.

I did check and another member on here with a very similar truck in similar condition asked for $15k and got $13.5k recently. So it is possible to do way better than KBB, but it might take a while to find the right person.
As for what I have in it, you'd be shocked! With the power if Amazon, patients, and smart shopping you can get very high end parts for these trucks for a fraction of what retail was!

That's in the neighborhood of what I was hoping for.

The truck I sold probably had a book value around $2500 for a fair example, it was in fair condition. But what I paid for it and had invested in it for general maintenance was less than that, and the trans was getting tired (a fact that I disclosed to the purchaser) I asked $1500 and got the $1200 I wanted.
Amazon is an amazing place so it might not surprise me all that much, I'm frugal myself. I think you have a good chance to get what your looking for out of it
