Odometer is not working

I just got a 97 Ford F-150 automatic V8 and just realized the odometer is not recording the miles

where would I look to see if the plug or cable is unplugged or how do I get it to start recording mileage again

I'm a little disappointed in myself as I should have noticed that during the test drive so now I don't know how much mileage this truck actually has

If the speedometer works, then the cluster is bad (odometer function only).

Yes the speedometer works but it's not recording any mileage

How hard is it to replace the cluster and is there any way to tell how long it's been unplugged would be nice to know the actual mileage on this truck

I have seen a video on youtube to remove the cluster and then re-solder connections on the cluster to restore the odometer

Is it just not showing any miles or is it showing miles but not recording new miles?

It's a common problem with these trucks that the odometer goes dark but it is still recording miles. There are instructions on this site on how to repair it.

That's all for 1999 and newer with the electronic odometer. 1997's had an old school mechanical odometer.

This set up worked on a 96 Explorer. It may be the same on the mechanical ODO for the F150? Nice video too.

Odo gear in cluster is broke more than likely.. Search youtube for a guy named chrisfix.

He has a recent video where he has the same issue in a 96 Mustang. At any rate, it's got the mechanical odo and he pulls the cluster and replaces the gear. His speedo worked fine.

Good luck!

That reminds me of when I was walking the lots on Sunday afternoons looking for a new truck. Back in the day, before they left a Sunday salesman to roam the lot.

I would be peeking thru the driver's window, straining my eyes, my hand cupped against the sun's glare...
"...Hey, this '98 leftover only has 16 miles on it!..."

"...Let see, this '99 has...DANG IT!"
