Bad Fuel Pump?

'03 4.6 V-8...ran fine going to work. After work, cranks but does not run. Changed fuel filter. Still will not run. Back in the day, you could put ignition switch in run position and could listen for fuel pump running. Tried that on this '03...makes a noise, almost like a "thump", then no sound at all.
Checked related fuses (PCM and fuel pump) and they aren't blown. Checked the inertia fuel pump shut off switch and it wasn't activated.
Not sure about the relay...don't know how to check it.

Before I buy a pump, thinking about removing the inlet fuel filter line and check for fuel flow from pump when ignition switch in run position.
Any ideas of how to verify pump operation or other electrical issues it could be?
Thank you...

The fuel pump only runs for 1 to 2 seconds.

Yeah, until it builds up pressure.

Thank you both! Removed fuel line to inlet side of fuel filter. Wife cranked truck. Nothing but a small amount sprayed, then nothing. Couldn't find a loaner pressure gauge for shredder valve. Ones they had weren't zeroed out and couldn't be.
Reckon I need to get one for future use!

Find and remove your ignition control module...mine was on the drivers side...underneath the hood hinge...it's mounted on a heat extractor with cooling fins...take both components off of the wall.....then take it to Autozone...they'll check it...about 58 bucks if you need a new one.

You're at least a generation late with that advice and it's still wrong. The ignition control modules on the previous generation trucks had nothing to do with fuel pressure...

Nothing but a small amount sprayed, then nothing.
The pump only runs for about 2 seconds when the key is first turned to RUN (don't have to hit START, it won't matter for this). If the pump is good and is operating correcly, you will get a VERY strong stream/spray of fuel out of the fuel filter's disconnected inlet line.
