2001 F150 SuperCrew Tail & Dash lights

Please help!
I have a 2001 F150 Supercrew. It was manufactured in Canada so it has the daytime running lamps. I have an issue with the fuse number 6 under the hood blowing. When it pops, the headlights will not turn off. For a couple of weeks I could replace the fuse and be okay for a few days. Finally it won't hold. I put a circuit breaker style fuse in hoping I can trace it but I have had no luck. It now pops the fuse the second I turn on the lights. I have looked around the tail lights, license plate lights and trailer lights plug for any shorts. I cannot find anything at all. I am at a loss as I have tested the switch as much as I can tell from the shop manual description on doing that. I finally got frustrated and unplugged the DRL module out near the fog lights. I taped up the plug to keep out water and such. I have scoured these forums for weeks but I just can't seem to find any solutions.

2001 F150 Supercrew
4.6L
NO automatic headlights.
I appreciate any input and I apologize if this is rehashing old news!

Thanks in advance!

I know these trucks have issues with wiring chafing in the column area near where it "tilts"

Not sure if that can tie into your symptoms or not.

I'll try and pull a system diagram and see what I can find.

Good luck!

Oh and we highly recommend only having one thread per subject. It gets confusing to have people helping you in multiple places.

I have removed your thread in the illumination section

Thanks Patman. I only re-posted because the post in Illumination had some 350 views without one reply. Sorry. I looked for a delete but as I am new here I was not sure how to do it.

Thanks again.

Thanks Again Patman. I am a decent driveway mechanic but electrical is really out of my realm. Not to mention the fact that I am in Idaho and it is a blamy 19 degrees Fahrenheit out today. Hard to spend a lot of time in the snow tracing wires. I was hoping I could get some more experienced help in where to start looking first. I have the Ford Shop manuals on CD but I suck at reading the wiring diagrams. I come from the construction world so only construction style blueprints make sense to me. I appreciate your help and patience with "the new guy".

So, I got a new headlight/parking light switch yesterday. I plugged it in and everything is the same. I keep blowing fuse #6. I took and ohmmeter to the original switch and it tests out that it works fine. So it looks like I bought a new switch for nothing. I pulled the tail lights out to check for bare wire. All is good. I inspected the license plate lights and no sign of heat/melting or bare wiring. I pulled some tape from the wiring at the switch to check for problems and nothing found. I completely disconnected the wiring to the trailer plug. Still keep blowing fuse # 6. So, I guess now I go deeper? Is there a spot where I should focus my efforts? I am at a total loss now. As if I need to be more lost!

Thanks again!

Off???

NO automatic headlights.
Are you sure?

Which switch position, PARK, HEADLIGHT or either, blows the fuse?

I finally got frustrated and unplugged the DRL module out near the fog lights. I taped up the plug to keep out water and such.
...and what, if anything, was the result?

I have the Ford Shop manuals on CD but I suck at reading the wiring diagrams.
You're probably going to get some practice.....

Yeah, the headlights stay on when that fuse pops. I have to pull fuse #3 in the hood compartment box to get them to turn off. But then they stay off until I turn them on again.

Are you sure?
I am almost positive that there are no automatic headlights.

As soon as power hits the switch it pops. In the park position. I can't even get it to the headlight position before it blows.

When I pulled the DRL nothing seemed to change other than the headlights did not turn on when the truck was started. Basically from what I can tell, it just disabled the Daytime Running Lights.

I was afraid of that!
