My 2002 shop manual says 9 ounces of oil is needed.
PAG refrigerant compressor oil (R-134a systems)
F7AZ-19589-DA (Motorcraft YN-12-C)
Specification WSH-M1C231-B

Compressors usually come with oil in it. So, you may need to empty the compressor to find out how much to add.

The compressor has 7oz in it and the auto parts store guy said it takes pag 46 oil just trying to make sure that is correct and I read somewhere that you have to put so much oil in the evaporator, condenser and dryer

9 oz is correct for tenth gen and probably many others gens. Emptying oil and measuring can be of interest, but if any leaked, is unreliable for "dump /measure / replace. The Murray replacement compressor ,(in 2023 for my '01) from OReillys had 3 oz, BUT... They REMIND WITH INSTRUCTIONS that a pink tag is ore-charges w 3 oz and a yellow tag is DRY. For me that means I have 3, add 6 oz/ for a TOTAL of 9. Beware partial answers for some tasks.

EDIT; In instructions it says manually turn the pulley 10 times, (almost other things you do.) We did. We turned it both ways at first. It seemed to have one point that was sticky. Back & forth. Mechanic then installed it. It was SO noisy, as it caught on whatever the internal issue is. It was $300+. Ordered another [better] one for $100 more... New, I think. The failed unit was a Murray. I usually have good luck w Murray. Hmmm.

Take it to an ac shop and have them do it. Then if they wreck it, it's on them

Paying it Forward. 10 yo posts about a 20 yo truck, updated when less than 100% clear - I see a benefit, however remote. In 10 years my UNmechanical son might be here w my 30 yo F150, searching for answers. But thx, glc. I need to set the year on my... hmmm. No watch. Day of the week is about all that matters to me. 🤔

Point, glc? Doing this in 2013. Found iffy info. Confirmed info. Posted. 9oz, which included the compressor, which may be dry or in the case of my now NEW, (their rebuilt failed,) it is shipped w 3 oz, so you add 6 oz..This may help someone searching when the thread is 5 more years old. Just like you do here and on other F150 forums. 👍
