2001 won't start until you take out/reinsert key!

Strange new issue with my 2001 (235k) F150 5.4L Super Crew Lariat 4WD. Occasionally, but becoming more frequent, the truck cranks over but will not start, or even cough or sputter! Take out the key and reinsert it and the truck cranks first try every time! This truck has always been a first crank starter but with this I am afraid that it may get progressively worse and not start at all one day. It does the same thing with my FoMoCo original key or the replacement we got at WalMart that my wife carries. This has been a GREAT and problem free truck and I just hate that now I can't trust it!

Any ideas?

The PATS transceiver in the steering column may be getting weak for some reason. Are you having any gauge issues in the cluster that weren't there before?
