Ask the guy putting the tires on. Tell him you want the biggest size possible on there and they will be able to look up what you can and can't do.

Is your truck a 2wd or 4wd? The stock size on my 02 F150Scab4x4 is 265/70x17. A move up just one size to 275/70x17 would fit just fine on my truck I'm sure.
In fact, I'm thinking along those lines too when I need tires because mostly what I use the truck for now is driving on the beach. A wider tire would improve my ability to stay on top of the sand and not dig in.

I would still find out from the person installing them. Tell him a buddy of yours has a set of tires that he can't use and that you wanted to know if he can install that size on your truck and if that size would fit. I'm pretty sure he will either have a book that tells him or he will have that size to use and test on your truck. Every time I go I ask for the biggest size possible hoping someone will test out the next size up and that it fits. It's close as it is but if I can fit a bigger size on, I'll do it.

It'll be close on a stock height 2wd. What kind of tires are they? Tread pattern and true manufacturer size (not what's on the sidewall) is going to make a difference.
