it ALWAYS help to know your engine etc.. (4.2 V6)
PO171
Possible causes
- Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection

Look at the code descriptions closer.
170 tells you a fuel trim Error bank 1.
171 tells you System lean bank 1.
171 code sets when the fuel trim table as been shifted out of limits 'rich' for that bank.
Both are telling you the same info bank 1 only.
Mass air and other parts common to all cylinder does not select one bank to set code for.
If the OX sensor has not been changed, either it or an intermittent is suspect. Sensor could be contaminated and Lazy operating.
The performance of the sensor and the trim table shift can be looked at with a Scanner viewing live data.
It is possible to have an air leak at the right point to affect just one bank but is rare on a V8 but more common on a V6 on the intake tract.
An exhaust break/leak would have to let a lot of air in to affect the OX sensor reading and likely be heard, as well.
Clear the fault and both codes will clear because they are directly related.
Good luck.
