To buy or not to buy... 02 F150

I have a chance to buy a 2002 F150 Supercrew XLT. It needs a transmission, front windshield is cracked, no stereo, and engine sputters (owner said it needs a new COP). Truck has 214k miles. He wants 1500 for it and not a penny less. worth it? Does the engine need to be moved to replace transmission?

Thanks insightful truck people

depends if you can find a transmission. a new transmission will be a little pricey unless you can find one in a junk yard for a good price. I don't see why you would have to pull the motor to put in a transmission. One thing to check on the engine is to make sure the head gaskets are not leaking oil, because that could be a $3,000 job because they have to pull the body off to get to the heads easily. If you can start the truck up and let it get to operating temp then shut it off and see if it smokes. I know my truck used to leak from the head gaskets on to my headers then after i would shut the truck off it would smoke because it was burning the oil on the headers off. If the truck is in nice shape inside and out it should be a good deal if you can get the engine running good and find a transmission.

If it has been sputtering a good while, there is always the possibility of ruining the cats.

Thanks guys for the input. Yes, it is the 5.4L engine and it does have 4x4. I had it at operating temps and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary... He isnt available today, so the soonest i would be buying would be tomorrow. The body is in fair condition and the interior is in good condition. I figure worst case, maybe part it out and i could make my money back... It just sounds like a fun project to me. Wife isnt as excited about it...
