2001 4x4 slow to disengage

Hi,

So I've searched through most of the threads relating to 4x4 shifting issues, but my truck will shift into 4H no problem, it just doesn't generally shift back to 2H. You can hear the relays clicking, the 4x4 light goes out etc, it just doesn't disengage right away. Eventually it does, you can feel when it finally does.

I was recently underneath, changed the TC fluid as it was due, and to get a better look at the motor that does the shifting as I understand it. It looks like I can get a replacement motor unit for about $120, but I see some references to "transmission control module" may need to be re-programmed after installation.

Any advice on the if the cause may be elsewhere, or on what the re-programming would entail?

Thanks,

Greg O.

You got all the wrong info.
Changing the trans fluid has little to do with 4wd operation.
There is no transmission control module other than the GEM located in the dash. It runs the transfer case motor only plus other functions the truck is equipped with..
If the 4H light goes out, it tells you the transfer case motor did rotate back to 2H.
You likely have a Vacuum Actuator that is in need of lubrication and operates restricted or the vacuum line is cracked to that side of the actuator.
Good luck.

I know for my truck to get out of 4wd right away i need to back up. If I take it out and continue driving it will stay in for a while but I also have the shifter on the floor, not the electrical stuff. I had a 99 Super Duty that had the electric 4x4 and I also needed to back up before it would disengage.

mine takes awhile to turn off to and if I'm parked if I switch to reverse if comes out quicker. I think its normal.
