Cold weather rough idle solved finally
Cold weather rough idle solved finally
I will put the answer at the top: the plastic intake manifold (thank you Ford) crumbled when removed. New intake and gaskets and it runs perfect. No more roughness and got power back that I did not even realize was gone.
a search of my posts will turn up years of questions on this, but finally nailed it. The computer gave lean codes, the exhaust smelled rich and it idled like crap and got bad (even for a 4x4) mileage. My own efforts to find it as well as several garages and a dealer failed. It was a smoke test that finally pin pointed the leak. Here is a list of failed fixes in case someone else is in same spot I was:
IAC valve replaced, twice
IAT sensor replaced
MAF sensor cleaned then replaced
DPMF sensor replaced
EGR valve replaced
PCV valve and hose replaced
all soft vacuum lines replaced
all hard vacuum lines tested no leaks
vacuum reserve tank tested no leaks
lots of unplugging and blocking vacuum lines looking for leak
O2 sensors replaced
drove many miles with scanner connected reading sensor data
propane hosed around the running engine looking for leak
yelled at it quite a few times, I don't cruse but I did use the word 'stupid' a lot
If you find yourself in the same jam, consider locating a garage with a smoke machine.

After the fact now but a look at the long term fuel tables would have shown the tables way out of limits confirming the rich fuel being injected due to an air leak.
Good to hear you finally found justice.
Good luck.
