How To Disable The FOB During Start

I don't know if this similar to the 2000 F150 or Expeditions but I figure I'll ask? My 2003 F150 doesn't require this. I have a 2000 Ford Ranger. In order to start it, you have to press the "unlock" button on the FOB before you turn the key. Otherwise the horn will go off. I guess it's part of the anti theft system. Is there a way to disable or remove the FOB (and door unlock) out of the start sequence? Thanks....John

No such procedure is required on ANY OEM Ford system.

Don't believe me? Go to www.motorcraftservice.com and scrutinize ANY Owner's Manual. It ain't in ANY of them.

What you have must be aftermarket - so it does not apply.

I was thinking that was a possibility. Below the steering column mounted at the bottom of the column panel is a little red light that flashes all the time. At this point I may need to figure out the manufacture of this aftermarket theft system and see how to disable it. I'll see if there is a fuse connection somewhere?

I would like to know this also. When I first purchased my truck, 2002 F150, I could just jump in, turn the key, and drive off. Now, after having the battery disconnected for some transmission work, I have to use the FOB before every start. There must be a way to configure the alarm behavior. Maybe it requires some fancy programing module or some obscure mode entry sequence. In any case, I'd like to know how.

I wonder if you also have an aftermarket ant-theft system too? I noticed there is a small "VIP theft protection" sticker on the drivers window.

Ok....I did some quick research and found Ford dealers (seen at least one) will "up-sell" a new vehicle with an anti-theft system if the customer wants it. You won't find this in the owner's manual. It's possible this truck has it. I still have more research to do but this could explain how an anti-theft system got on this truck.

Another thing that may help. The first part is for a Ranger....go to the second part about the valet disable.

Answer
There are a couple of ways to look at this issue.
If it's the OEM FACTORY alarm (ie; horn honk, headlights),
then the FACTORY ALARM DISARM WIRE is a dark
green/purple wire |-|, Located in the drivers kick panel
area coming out of the door.

Once Located, splice into the wire with
a simular guage wire, and put it to
a solid chassis ground. This terminates
the alarm functions entirely.

However, I suggest you get an aftermarket
alarm system to protect it since it's
now vulnerable.

Speaking about that probability,
your 2nd option is...

If this IS an aftermarket alarm we are dealing with,
(parking lights flash, siren and an LED
blinking light in the dash), then try this....

...Put the key in the ignition, and turn forward
all the way just before cranking. Then within
5 seconds, locate, press and hold in the
valet/overide button, usually found under the
dash area to the left of the knee,
(push button, spring loaded)
until the installed LED (the blinking light)
in your dash area goes on solid,
and the siren chirps once.

(Your valet switch might be the toggle
(on/off) type. in this case, key on,
flip switch in opposite direction,
then turn the key off.)

This should reset the alarm, and reset
the grounded relay on the starter wire,
allowing you to start the engine.

At this point, the only thing working would
be the keyless entry from the alarm,
if it came equipped that way.

Just Repeat these steps to place it
back to usable armed mode.
You may get 2 chirps, confirming it,
and the lights may flash twice as well.

Let me know which worked & what happens.

Thanks John!

I didn't think there was an aftermarket alarm since I can use the OEM alarm FOB but I seem to recall there is a "VIP theft protection" sticker. Truck is ~200 miles away at the moment so I'll check next time I can(2 weeks). I will also look for the valet switch and see if the disable procedure works.

So this is the sticker on my driver side window.

I found this switch above the parking brake pedal.

If I hold the switch I can start the truck without the FOB, but I had no luck reprogramming\disabling the alarm. I put the key in and turned it to the ON position just before starter engages. Then I held the valet switch for 5-10 seconds. Nothing happened to the LED on the dash and the truck would not start without pressing the FOB button.

I have a 99 ford explorer and I am unable to program a new key fob as the door agar light will no go out. I would like to disable it or by pass it.

just cut the power wire to that module or unplug the harness to it. should disable the system until to can find the right fob for it.
