Head sounds like bad power steering pump.

First time poster here. I'm hoping I can get some help with a 2001 f150 5.4 triton head issue. When It is 0 degrees or colder the passenger side head sounds just like a bad power steering pump for about 20 seconds. I noticed I can here it at other times to but it is much quieter. Any help would be nice.

You sure it's not the alternator whining? That's normal on a cold start when it's that cold.

It could be as simple as the belt. When I was working in Wisconsin, my 2000 F150 5.4 fan belt started making lots of noise when it was started cold. A new belt and the noise went away.

Sorry glc and roadie I've been away for a couple days. I'll look into your suggestions and get back to you.

What oil are you running? The timing chain tensioners will not function properly with thick oil and the chains can slap the block and cover.

Pop the belt off and spin the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley. I'd put money on one of them with loud bearings. They tend to act up in the cold first. My idler is bad as we speak.
