5.4 swap and torque conveter problems

I have posted this on another forum, 150 forum dot com, thinking it was this one, after minimal help, and feeling more lost i finally looked for my original post and had to nack track to here, a better forum i feel!!! so

Ive done a bunch of looking around and cant find anything that fits my problems.

I have a 98 f150 4x4 that had a 4.6l rod bearings locked up, i just got done swapping in a 5.4l from a 99 expedition. i followed all the information i could find on the web i completed the switch this morning, but have issues, really big issues.

first is in the flywheel torque converter area, i am keeping my 4r70w trans so i decided to use the 4.6l starter. Wrong!! i thought it was a bell housing issue to fit the nose cone that the 4.6 has. turns out the 5.4l flexplate hits the starter. so i switched, but had to swap the starter mounted solenoids sue to a broken bolt. got two starts out of it. then it died and turning key only clicked the firewall start solenoid. I was to the parts store and bought a new starter, wasnt gonna change it ever again. solved that problem.
after geting the starter solved i fired it up, and it made a bunch of racket, like a misfire or knock, hard to explain, cooudlnt find the issue until i tried moving the vehicle. the noise has subsided a bit but when i put it in 4 low driver or reverse it takes 4000 rpm to get it to try and roll. I suspect and what ive been told is i improperly installed the torque converter and have now ruined my pump. i just slipped it on and wiggled until it slipped on. since the underlying eninge tone is so perfect im thinking my noice is from TC or pump since i have no power. can an improper install hurt the TC? I used the TC from the expedition. after a while of idling it started dripping atf, so im assuming the seal is shot. how hard is it to change pump? how could i know if mine is bad? if pump goes bad like this can i ruin the rest of the trans?

2nd isssue, i saw the 5.4 run for a bit in the original vehicle. now while running i have a plume of white smoke. My other 98 4.6 has a bad intake gasket bleeding coolant into a cylinder. I just put new intake gaskets on the 5.4L so i would hat to think that there is a leak in one. I know it could be head gasket or cracked head, but knowing it worked before leaves me puzzeled. constant white smoke after 15 min of idle would burn out any water from all the time all parts have been sitting. od drive it to see if it clears out but with the first isue im stuck. coolant bottle doesnt go down much if at all And the otehr puzzler is the upper radiator hoseis soft, feels empty. getting rather frusterated. any insight would be greatly appreciated. im gonna be very angry if i have to pull the trans to fix that isssue then pull the enigne again to fix another, but hey its only money right?

You said: (i just got done swapping in a 5.4l from a 99 expedition) The Ford Expedition received the E40D transmission for the 1997 and 1998 model years and a few 99 early before going to the 4R100. (Which if you had a lot of torque it would not hold up too) Aftermarket fixed this as they could take 1000 ft pounds after.
I know this an old post, but you have a 4r70w trans flywheel and that flywheel is the only one that will work. If the transmission that you got the other engine out of is the same as the engine going back in is. A 5.4 out of any 97-03 going into an engine bay must have a flywheel for that transmission type. The e40D flywheel on a 4r70w will not work as they e40d flywheel will bind the 4r70w torque convertor as it is different if you lay them side by side. Been there did that one as I thought all were the same by Ford and they are not for those transmissions.
Now the gear ratios for the E4OD and 4R100 transmissions were identical: 2.71-to-1 for first gear, 1.54-to-1 for second, direct 1.00-to-1 for third, and 0.71-to-1 for fourth. Just in case others have this problem as well.
