1997 Ford F150 AC Compressor advice
Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have a question or two. AC compressor needs changing. I'm looking for a job so kinda strapped for cash. Auto Zone says if I don't change orvice tube and accumulator it lessons or voids warranty... My AC will not even hold freon for one day at 20 dollars a can. Would u change compressor only if its leaking and u are strapped for cash? I'm sweating my but off driving around looking for a job. How hard is it to change compressor if i have never done one? How long would it take? I was told it is a 4 bolt process. Also, a shop quoted 900 dollars to do it with 3 parts not including freon. A mechanic online locally said he would do compressor only for 200 dollars and 250 for labor of accumulator, compressor and orvice tube. Need AC to look for a job so I'm not saturated in sweat. I'm in Florida. 180 for compressor with 2 year warranty if I replace the other two parts and 3 months if i don't. A reman is twenty dollars cheaper with a one year or 3 month warranty depending on how many parts i replace. I don't have a vacuum pump what would u do? Will i need a vacuum pump?
What if it's bad then I put 60.00 of freon in it b4 i realize it. I was told mine is leaking freon. Won't even hold freon for a day. I'm wondering if I can get by without changing accumulator and orvice tube.
I would replace just the compressor and once you have sealed an income then replace everything else. You should be alright for that short period of time. I would have it double checked to make sure you have no issues elsewhere in the system before replacing it though so you do not end up putting one on and it continues to leak or damages the new one.

Shop quoted me 900 bucks the other day and told me that the freon I had just added was already leaked out. Tonight for 20 bucks a guy added one small can and my truck is ice cold. I'm going to see if i can hold off now on the compressor change. Tonight I was getting a 60 degrees temperature within a 25 minute trip. If it will hold freon for 3-4 months I can deal with it. Air was ice cold tonight. I'm starting to think the shop was trying to just sell me a compressor, orvice tube, accumulator and labor for 900 bucks.
First I would try the refrigerant with the leak sealer and dye. If you do need a compressor and decide to do it yourself, yes, you need a vacuum pump - especially with the humidity in Florida. If you have an air compressor, you can use a cheap $20 venturi style vacuum pump, otherwise, $100 for one from Harbor Freight.
