High idle issue
High idle issue
Not sure if this is an IAC issue or not, so here goes. When coming to a stop, taking my foot off of the gas pedal the engine stays around 1000 rpm's. This causes me to press harder on the brake pedal. Only when I am about to come to complete stop do the rpm's come down to normal idle ( most of the time ). At 1000 rpm's, I can feel the engine pulling, so I need to get this resolved before I rear end somebody.
Any ideas or suggestion?
Thank you,
David

High idle would suggest to me a sticking IAC, not an unusual problem. If idle did not drop a vacuum leak is indicated. Does the idle drop when removing your foot from brake pedal? If so a leaking vacuum brake booster is indicated. Do not bother trying cleaning IAC as results not consistent and part is relatively inexpensive.

I've tried to clean an IAC on my son's Bird, but that was a waste. Ended up replacing anyway. I'll try to find one on the ol' ebay...
My 1999 F150 5.4L was doing the same thing. About 1000rpms. 2-3 seconds after coming to a stop, it would drop. You could smell the brakes from the extra braking.
Sometimes it would "idle" at 50mph.... like have the cruise control on. Bottom line it was a vacuum leak. (I don't really want to talk about it, but it was a missing gasket on the IAC.)

I had similar issues earlier this year and the throttle position sensor was bad. It was about $35.00 from Oreilly and easy to replace. Two screws and an electrical connection. Its mounted on the side of the throttle body. Several easy to remove items had to come off for access and took about 30 minutes. Hope this helps.
There gunk in the IAC. it is sticking. Remove the gunk lube good and you're Idle issue are likely over.
It's simple enough and worth the try though, to save some green.
The funny thing about my truck though, is that the problem sorta materialized after I cleaned the intake and MAF sensor and went back to an OEM paper air filter. I'll tinker...
