WTH is the oil filter?

I have a 2001 5.4l Lariat 4X4. Where do they hide the oil filter? I have a 1997 and a 2002 Lightning and those filters are easy to find (I change my own oil), but the '01 has me baffled. Anyone with pics of the location?

Thanks,

Jim

The filter on my '99 was remote mounted under the front bumper, near the fog light.
I think it was on the driver's side, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I know about that one; my '97 has it in that location.

Yea, it was an option for that year. Did you check by the spare... who knows ?

The 01's are a PITA..Royally! I had one. You have to get the tires turned a certain way to make it easier. Everything is in the way, - what a mess that can be.

The oil filter in my 2000 was basically in between the upper and lower control arms on the driver's side. It was mounted sideways, parallel to the ground, so it's much easier to see and get your arm in there if you turn the wheel to the left. Mine was 2wd though, so yours may be slightly different.

On my 01 5.4 its right by the idler arm, to better access it turn ur wheel to the left and youll be able to see and handle it better. Might be a tight squeeze but its there. You cant miss it.

I'm guessing the OP found it but on an '01 it could be in three different locations.

Right at the adapter at the drivers side front of the block, at the drivers side rear of the block on an adapter or behind the bumper if it has the remote mount setup with the rubber hoses.

Thanks, everyone. Haven't rechecked yet, but assuming it's above the front diff; sounds like fun to change. Put this right up there with the spark plugs and door cracks.

On the 2000 SCAB4x4 I used to have and the current 2002SCAB4x4, both with 5.4s the oil filters are mounted on the drivers side sort of in the middle of the engine. I drive mine up on 2x10s to get it off the driveway an additional 1 1/2" and turn the steering wheel to the left. Then I have no problems at all replacing the filter.
