Oil filter adapter removal revisited

Hello all,
Have read several post here on this subject but remain unclear as to the best step by step way to remove this seemingly PITA project . My truck is a 1999 F-150 XLT 4x4 with a 4.6 The Ford service manual states to remove the front drive axel and doesn't discuss any need to remove the power steering pump or pulley, while the posts here make no mention of this axel removing step. Would really appreciate a bullet proof step by step procedure to change this adapter gasket.
Thank you in advance

Thanks for the reply, though what about the service manual stating to remove the front drive axel. Also did you remove the complete power steering pump or just the pulley? Have read that the pulley has to be removed first in order to access all the pump bolts?

Oil filter adapter ? O-ring leaking? You have a 99, so it's not the remote system correct ?

AFAIK, the only time you have to drop the axle is when the pan has to be removed.

You should have a cooler on that one... Yea, never heard of an axle drop for that , and yes, the manuals aren't always perfect, - even the Ford service manuals lol.

Thanks Jbrew,
Yes it is not the remote system. I plan to clean the areas up soon and see what I am up against and will check for the oil cooler?

Dodged a major bullet!!
The top of the oil filter was rusted out, the leak was there, not the filter gasket and luckily not the adapter. End of story.
