Common Problem or Not? COPS #7-#8

Hello and sorry if this was gone over before. I did a small search and didn't see what I was looking for.

Over the winter I let the truck sit a few days and when I went to take her for a ride she was missing like crazy. No big deal, a scanner told me #7 COP was bad. Again no biggie went on www.rockauto.com and ordered a Ford Motorcraft OEM COP and plug. I tried the fix myself but it was a PIA so my mechanic buddy helped me out and fixed it up real quick. That was then and now this.

I just had surgery on my right ankle and had not driven the truck in a few days (3-4). I take her for a short ride to 7-Eleven just to get out of the house and she is missing again. This time it's the #8 COP. I ordered the parts once again, $47 shipped to my door so no biggie but I noticed today I had to take a short ride up the road (5-6 miles). The miss was still there but not a horrible one. We went out for lunch and a few hours later I drive the truck home and the Check Engine light is off now and the truck is not missing at all.

Could it be a common issue with these truck? 2002 5.4L 4x4

I am thinking maybe it's the way moisture or water from rain drips off something and is messing with those COPS? Just a guess but it would make sense.

I bought the truck 3 years ago with 25,000 miles on her and she only has 65,000 miles now. I'm sure the COPS could use replacing due to their age but I'm wondering if it's just a getting them wet issue and if so can it be solved without buying new COPS?

With 65k, I would replace all the spark plugs. Make sure you use dielectric grease on the cops. Excessive plug gap will cause weak cops to get worse.

You can save on OEM quality cops on Ebay, look for Visteon 60-1000.

Yep I figured it might be time just to change them all. I will look into those COPS but honestly I am partial to Motorcraft and @ $45 each why not? I did use the grease on the #7 COP change thanks for the heads up. I just wasn't sure if it was a common issue like some trucks have. Overall my truck is awesome and treats me well so I like to treat it well in return.

Visteon Corporation (VC) is an American global automotive parts company spun off from the Ford Motor Company in 2000. Visteon is to the Ford Motor Company as Delphi is to General Motors and Denso is to Toyota.

In other words, they are the same part. Visteon makes them for Ford.
