Throttle body keeps getting dirty?
Throttle body keeps getting dirty?
I have been dealing with this since I bought the truck. But every 4-5 months or so when I go start my truck and take off the pedal sticks for a moment until I break it free. I cleaned the throttle body of carbon and cleaned the butterfly real good but it just keeps getting carbon build up? Whats the deal? It doesnt seem to affect performance at all and air filter is good to go....
It sounds very much like the last owner played with the throttle stop setting allowing the plate to go fully closed.
What happens is the engine cools down, the throttle body bore shrinks from cooling and seizes the throttle plate.
The plate is never to go fully closed like this.
There is a procedure to set it but do the following;
Adjust it to open the plate so it does not stick in it's bore plus a bit more.
On a hot engine, remove the IAC connector so the computer cannot affect idle air.
Adjust the stop screw for an idle of about 550 or so the motor does not stall.
Plug up the IAC connector.
The idle should increase toward about 750 rpm.
The proper ratio of airflow between these must be maintained for the IAC to have it's full range of control for cold, hot starts and high idle cold start operation.
Let us know what you find.
Good luck.
