1999 5.4L Not starting - assume fuel pump

Hello all,

I have been lurking for a while and have gotten tons of help over the years to repair parts of my truck. This time I seem to be stumped.

I have a 1999 5.4L 4x4 supercab. It has been sitting for 6 months. During that time, the truck was sitting rear down on a 5-10% incline. When I attempted to start it the other day (after charging the battery), it would not start. The starter cranks but the engine does not "turn over".

So, following all the good advice on this site, I started troubleshooting....
  • Checked the Fuel pump fuse - good
  • Checked the fuel pump relay - ohmed out fine. Swapped it with another relay just in case..same result
  • Check the emergency shut off - not tripped. but I cycled it just to be sure.
  • Tried a pressure test on the fuel rail - 0 PSI
  • Changed the fuel filter
  • banged on the fuel tank (heard that might make a stuck float or pump cycle on
  • Removed air filter and used starting fluid - engine turns over and starts fine...then dies after 3-5 seconds

Any thing I am missing that I should test? or am I destined to drop my fuel tank and replace the pump (I have rhino liner so can't lift the bed)

Thanks for any advice of something else to try.
Ed

When you turn the key on, do you hear the fuel pump prime? How much gas is in it?

If your liner had been installed properly, the bed bolts would not have been covered over.

Thanks for the reply.

I hear something "priming" under the hood when I turn the key, but I do not hear anything in the gas tank area at all.

Hum....I will have to look more closely at the bed tomorrow. I thought the rhino liner was on the bolt heads, but now you have me second guessing. I know I can see the torx holes, but I thought the actual bolt heads and washers were covered (just leaving the hole available for emergency use (but at the cost of ruining the bed seal.

So, I have the bed off. Ready to test voltage at pump before I replace it. How do I do this? Do i have to strip the wires? Don't see a connector that I can test at. Or do i have to pull the pump first and test the removed pump.

the electrical connectors should be "relatively close"....maybe tucked inside the frame rail a bit.

a older thread, but good info>>https://www.f150online.com/forums/19...-problems.html
