Do both. Gears will help you the most with the towing but you will need a tune to tell the computer you have new gears. Plus, it will run much better.

Hey thanks for the reply what would you do if you had a budget and it was leaning more towards the custom tunes?

I would be concerned that the tires with the tune would put too much stress on the transmission.

Keep in mind that is my opinion. Others may have gone through the same experience and have some differing ideas.

You need 4.56 gears AND custom tunes. SCT device recommended.

I assume you're 4wd, yes? You could get tunes and gear only the rear if you don't use the 4x4 frequently, then do the front pumpkin later on once you've saved some more. That way you can get your truck in shape to tow, just not offroad. However, you absolutely cannot use 4wd at all unless both gear ratios are the same.

The custom tunes will help, and you can certainly just get those, see how it works, and then do the gears. But the gearing is what's actually going to make a big difference.

"Toy Hauler" down here means a travel trailer with the "garage" in the back for quads/dirt bikes etc. They are all big and heavy. Is that what you are refering to? If so I have yet to see one that I would tow with a 1/2 ton truck.
