CAI Drone?

Gotts mod aside I have been thinking about a full CAI system. I like the look of the enclosed box on the volant as well as the paper filter for it.

My concern is drone. My buddy has a system on his Ram and the drone driving around town is insane. Are there any systems out there for the 5.4 that dont sound bad?

Sure.

The stocker.

No aftermarket unit will be as quiet - or drone-free.

Thing is, there is no advantage to changing the OEM unit out for aftermarket on a stock truck for anything other than looks. There certainly are no perf benefits.

Save yer money, IMHO.

If you insist - there are few true closed boxes - try S&B: http://www.sbfilters.com/index.php/y...2001/ford.html

My question to that is why does Troyer performance who most board users hold in high esteem sell a CAI with their performance "kits"?

Beats me - been there, done that, a long time ago. I found the custom tuning portion of the 'kit' provided the vast bulk of the tangible gains, at the end of the day.

And my MAF kept getting dirty too. And my IAT's were never as low as they were running the stock intake. And it was noisey, and droned during high load conditions - e.g climbing grades.

Never again.

Seems you have already convinced yerself. Yer truck. Yer money.

MGD out.

I'm convinced neither way.

It was a legit question. If it drones I'm not really interested.

I've seen equal number of posts from those who rave how great their CAI helped throttle response to those that say it only made their wallet lighter.

I wouldn't be opposed to trying one but if I have to listen to it drone AND it doesn't help then its a no go.

I wouldnt pay for a CAI. No one has ever shown factual data (dyno results) that support them giving anything but miniscule performance gains if any. The drone + I think there ugly..

I have had them in the past and I will never buy one again. Most suck air from the engine bay which is not cold at all and on most vehicles there are zero performance gains (some get a couple of horsepower on the dyno). They don't filter as well as stock filters and the oiled filters dirty your MAF. I held my old K&N up to the sunlight and I was surprised at how many small holes it had in it. IMO they do look nice but I am not willing to risk engine longevity to look pretty are you? The only use I can see for them would be on a supercharged vehicle that never sees offroad or dusty conditions of any kind.

Main reason I really got lookign is I also wanted to ditch my K&N. Always a hassle to clean it and as stated the MAF issue.

I was looking for a dry filter but don;t see much info on anyone using them. Short of a stock paper filter I was looking at the Volant which used the thick layered style paper.

But as the votes seem to be unanimous about CAI and drone that kills that idea.

Anyone here run the dry washable filters?

A site favourite is Amsoil's EAA filters. Recommended by some seriously savvy folks...

I'd run either this, or a disposable Motorcraft, Wix, Purolator PUREONE, or Napa GOLD air filter. Nothing else.

You'd need the EAA191 model.

Yep, that's what I run in my Volant system. Best set up I've ever run. The MAF and nano filter are just about maintenance free. Maf remains clean and the filter doesn't embed.

Not sure that I've ever heard a CAI drone. Unless you referring to induction noises? An exhaust can drone @ cruising speeds. Maybe it's not your intake at all.

Oh yeah - they can drone, aight. I had a stock exhaust that was dead-quiet with the OEM intake. Added that AF1, Pulled a hill and it was Moany-Moany lol. Horrible. 1800-2200 rpm was unbearable after a while. So I hadda go faster. "Honest officer - the intake made me do it"

But - it's not consistent. Some folks don't get to experience the pleasure. Why? Beats me. Maybe they're deaf fromm too much Led Zepplin
