transmission has no first gear at all, but all others work.

2002 Ford F150 5.4 2WD,
Happened all of a sudden. Truck has no first gear at all. I cannot start off in drive, I have to put it in second, then once I start rolling I can put it in Drive and it works perfect until I come to a stop. When I come to a stop, I have to put it in Second again and when I start to roll (say 3 miles an hour) I pop it into drive and it works perfect. Reverse works, but I do feel a slight jump when backing up.
I have looked all over many forums, and I have not found anyone with this exact problem.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance.

If your sure no code is set for transmission solenoid A failure then there likely is a forward clutch failure of some sort.
Good luck.

The engine light is on, I have to get down and have it read. Forward clutch is the same as the reverse I thought. Reverse works but jumps a little.
Thanks for the reply.

Cheap readers that places like Autozone use can't read tranny codes. You need a higher end scanner for that.

NORMALLY, you get a trans code if the OD light starts flashing, not the CEL.

I have access to a Genisys EVO 3874TPR from a friend of mine. That should do the trick.
The OD light has never flashed that I'm aware of.

It's really strange, first gear or starting in drive acts just like it's in neutral.

Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it.
