Question Overdrive button does not work in drive only.

Hello,
First off, I did a search of all the Overdrive button issues but I do not see anything related to my father in laws issue. (His F150, the other issues are for a different website.)

01 F150 XL 2WD V6.

When you first turn the car on, in Park you can hit the OD button over and over until your heart is content because it works fine. While driving around at first you can hit it over and over, if you have issues and like to watch the "OFF" light up and off.

Problem is, after driving for about an hour: for me it was in a drive thru to get a drink, the OD light came on (on illuminates "OFF"). So I kept it in drive pushed the button a few times and finally it would not work. It was stuck with the overdrive in the off position. So I put it in Neutral, pushed button, and it worked fine, overdrive was back on, put it back in drive and the button mysteriously works again.

My better halves father says this happens 100% of the time on long drives. After 30 min to an hour it comes on and he feels it in the truck that the RPM's adjusted, especially while on the highway. But while driving it shifts smooth up and back down with the OD on or off.

Options from reading here:
1. Overdrive button bad, or cables thru the shifter are pinched/ shorting.
2. Fuse 25.. or was it 29, is blown. (but wouldn't this cause permanent issue?)
3. Transmission has an internal problem.
Could it be old trans fluid? Heat issues?

Help. I appreciate any and all advice.

First why play with the button?
The wiring is either broken or shorting out at the shifter pivot point.
Banging on the button could have blown the bulb.
How it works;
The switch is a separate function from the bulb for it's action.
When the switch is operated with the engine running it signals the computer to 'inhibit' the OD function.
If you turn off the engine and restart, the computer automatically returns the transmission to OD function. You cannot keep it locked out full time with one operation of the switch.
The bulb tells you two things. One when the switch is operated and to signal transmission electrical troubles that also set code in the computer.
You need to get this fixed because there I a large difference between OD and third gear for engine rpm.
For example if the rear ratio would be 3.55 in third, the ratio in OD would be 3.55 x .77 = 2.73.
This is a big change in engine rpm for the 'same' road speed.
Hope this helps you see what the issue is.
Good luck.
