2000 F150 Windsor 4.6 Timing??

I Bought a 2000 F150 with a W in the VIN. The owner said he heard a loud rattle in the engine a few seconds before it quit. A repair shop said he had a timing issue.

I take the timing chain cover off and sure enough the RIGHT side timing chain tensioner quit tensioning and the chain was slapping around (damaged the crank sensor pulse wheel, timing cover and the head had damaged (tipped) valves)

I took both heads into a "reliable" engine rebuilder to have both heads serviced / rebuilt. The RIGHT head also had bad cam journals so they decided to scrap the head. They sold me a rebuilt core head.

When I installed it in my truck I noticed the cam journals had their own individual caps where as my original head had 2 journal REP camshaft cap clusters.

My original valve cover didn't fit the replacement head due to valve cover bolts in my cover not matching with the replacement head pattern.

My intake gasket was the same shape but the plastic locating pins in the gasket didn't match the location holes in the replacement head. I had to cut away the gasket locating pins so the gasket would sit flat when installing the intake.

My original timing chain cover bolts were to small to bolt the valve cover to the replacement head. I got bigger ones from a salvage yard.

NOW THE PROBLEM!!!!!

I timed the cams using Both the FORD Pick-ups 1997 thru 2003 Haynes Repair Manual AND the internet to ensure the timing positions of both cams, crank and timing chains were right. Pretty simple infact after reviewing the process 30 times

SO. . . . . I get it together and the truck wouldn't start!!! I just checked the compression on either side of the engine and the left has good compression and the RIGHT side has ZERO compression. I feel sick to my stomach.

I took for granted this "pro engine building shop" new what they were giving me.

I have to tear the engine down and pray the supplied replacement head valves aren't bent.

QUESTION. . . . If my timing marks are in their correct positions then what could cause my ZERO compression on that side??? Is my original cam not a match to this replaced head???

QUESTION. . . . Is the replacement head a 5.4??? and if so can you just bolt on a 5.4 SOHC head to a 4.6 SOHC engine and expect it to work???

HELP!!!!!!!

What the shop did was sell you a Windsor head. Take it back.

Thanks GLC. I removed the head and it's undamaged. I'm taking it back tomorrow.

You also have to match up PI or non-PI. I believe the 2000 4.6 is non-PI.

Ok got the new head in. Truck ran rough for 3 seconds and then quit. good compression on the left side and very minimal on the right.

Is timing the Romeo different than the Windsor? I line up all the timing marks on the cams, crank gear and chains just as pictures and diagrams show. . . . . .

crank timing chain gear has mark (dot) in the 6 o'clock position

Both cams gear markers (dots) in perfect alignment with the coloured timing chain links.

ALL TIMING MARKS ARE IN PERFECT ALIGNMENT. I'm a mechanic and have timed other engines before and never had this problem. Aligning the coloured chain links and gear markers as depicted in illustrations must be for the Windsor

Try this. Starting post 6. This is the way I have built engines and no problems at all.
