I paid for one once, I was too busy at the time, so I farmed it out. Cost me 800 to get it out of hock. That was just the rear gears. That truck was running 44's/302 w/a stick. I think I broke everything on that truck at least once lol.

Finding the gears cheap is the easier part. Getting them installed correctly will cost yuh, - unless, like I said, you can do that yourself. The labor charge might be enough to put you in that "must learn" mode. It's not that bad figuring out really. In fact, the service manual will help you with setting up the back lash.
Air tools help, but you can do without.

4.11's ?

Given the 4.6's power is higher in the RPM band, it will probably help your MPG a bit. Not to mention not kicking out of overdrive as much on inclines. That will really help with MPG if you are in a somewhat hilly area. In my '01 I had 3.31's with 35's and went to 4.56's. I gained 3mpg when towing my camper.

4.10's will help your gas mileage. Lower gearing generally helps MPG in town and hurts it a bit on the highway. Your engine is essentially working less than it was before to get up to speed, but working harder to maintain it.

It won't necessarily be working harder to maintain it given his engine. 4.6L 2v hits its power band at a higher RPM than a 5.4 would have. Also not kicking out of OD as much will help MPG as well. You are able to get more of what little torque the motor has to the wheels. My '01 with a 4.6L 2v, 315/75/16 summit trail climber CT's, and 4.56's still managed to get 15-16 highway.

One of the mandatory requirements when I was shopping was the 5.4. I gave up leather and some mileage to get it when one came along that was a really good deal, but I'm happy with my choice! Had to have the big boy motor And my truck is still pretty damn slow!

I get like XcrappyX.X miles per gallon highway! And city! I just took a 2 hour, 110 mile drive drive today, all highway, almost all 65-75 MPH with a few slow downs and I *might* have gotten 14 mpg.
