Pitman Arm replacement

I have a 99 F150 4WD. How do I, or can I, remove the pitman arm from the steering gear without removing the steering gear? E How says remove the nut and use a pitman arm puller (way over simplified). This impossible because there is a frame member directly below the steering out put shaft (no clearance for the puller).

Patman, What kind of puller did you use? Do you have a picture?

I answered my own question. Kind of. I did have to unbolt the steering gear box from the frame but did not remove it. This allowed enough movement in the box to position the pitman arm puller through an opening in the frame right by the forward lower control arm bushing. After loading up the puller I hit the forward ring of the pitman arm with a large ballpeen and the arm popped right off.

I've had to do similar on Chevy's before, I don't remember the 4x4 F150 being that much of a PITA.

Glad you got it!
