2001 F150 5.4L engine dies while driving
Hello all,
I'm a long time creeper but first time poster. I did some searches on the internet and found some results. However, nothing exactly matched my issues.
A few days ago, my 2001 F150 5.4L died while driving downhill. The brakes and steering turned off but the radio stayed on. I was able to coast to a safe spot and stopped. The truck was running at 100% until it died, no issues, nothing.
I know my fuel was low (not low enough to have the fuel light on) so I was hoping if I added 5 gallons, it would start up. The engine kept cranking, and would kind of did a light sputter sometimes but never fired up.
My battery was at full charge, and recently (roughly 2-3 months ago) I had all the spark plugs and coil packs replaced. I am thinking it is fuel related so I checked the fuse (good) and replaced the fuel filter. Truck does still not start. The fuel filter was full of gas, so if it is fuel related, does that mean that the issue is between the filter and the rails? Could it be a CPU issue? What should I try next?
Thank you in advance,
Ben

When you have sudden stoppage like this, you must find the major cause 'first'.
Do not begin to change parts until you do because you can introduce a second problem making things ever worse.
Test for fuel pressure with a gage. This would have eliminated the hassle of changing out a fuel filter if no problem was found.
Next is there ignition at cranking.
These are to two major areas you begin with.
There could be a loss of power due to a fuse or relay powering the computer.
There could be a loss of the crank sensor such as the plug came off.
None of these would set a code on a sudden shutdown.
So you see you must begin looking for the issue before changing any parts.
Good luck.

Thanks!
I checked the fuses already (#18) and it seems good. Is there a way to check the relay? Or do you just buy a new one?
I found an article on how to test the crank sensor as well. In case anyone needs it in the future, he it is: http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/for...ition-sensor-1
Thank you again.
