rear end noise and shocks

so I jacked my rear off the ground today and spun the wheel by hand. heard a clicking noise. is this normal? or something bad. and I also noticed my rear shocks have dents in them from the axle.

No not normal. If the driveshaft was turning, the clicking was probably u-joints. Having dents in the shocks from the axle is not good. Tells me either the vehicle has been severely overloaded or in your travels you have done something to compress the suspension all the way. Maybe jumping the truck?
