Tire Fitment: 2002 F-150 FX4

Hey all!

I'm looking to get some new tread for my truck this fall and am trying to plan some things out as far as budget wise, I've tried looking this up as well and no luck.

My question is, on a stock 2002 F-150 FX4, with the stock wheels, what is the largest tire I can run, width and height, without rubbing or trimming?
I've heard rumors of 35's, but I can't believe that one.

Can y'all help me out?!

Thanks,
Snobum

33's unleveled, 35's leveled with minor trimming. Both have the chance of rubbing frame at full lock. You can do up to a 12.50 but I'd try to stay around a 11.50 at the most because of the stock wheels being 7.5" wide.

But of course it also depends on the manufacturers specs of the size, not what's on the sidewall, and the tread pattern.

Very well said. I stayed with 33's on mine cause I have 10 inch wide wheels and wanted room for the tires to flex

Like Pizzaman said.. Alot of it has to do with the tire itself. The actual dimensions of the tire and not whats on the sidewall. Every manufacturer makes tires differently in size. For example a 33x12.5 made by Mickey Thompson may only measure out to 32.7x12.2 where as a 33x12.5 made by Cooper measures out to be 33x12.7. These are examples and not actual numbers. There are even differences in the same company depending on which style of tire it is. For example a 285/75/R16 Cooper Discoverer AT3 is 33.1 x 11.8 where as a Cooper Discoverer ST/MAXX is 32.9 x 11.7 same company different tire = different size. The more aggressive the tread pattern the less likely your going to be able to fit a 35 without trimming. A BFG all terrain in a 35 would be a better fit than say a 35 Nitto Mud Grappler. Can a 35" tire fit on a stock FX4 yes. Will you have to crank the torsion bars, trim a little or have some rubbing all depends on the tire and its physical dimensions. Also, even though it will fit I would be leery about running a 12.5 inch tire on a 7.5" wheel. Thats a lot of tire to be pulled towards itself on a wheel thats 5 inches narrower than the tire. I believe a good rule of thumbs is that the tire should be no more than 3" wider than the wheel its being mounted to. Of course there are going to be people who will say that they have ran this tire on this wheel for xxx amount of miles or years or whatever and they never had a problem. To them I say your lucky. There is a reason why the tire manufacture has a suggested rim width minimum and maximum. Hope this helps.
