Plugged cats? misfire?

Having trouble with my 97 5.4 173K as usual. Started 2 months ago on the interstate, truck began to misfire badly for about 2 minutes then drove fine the rest of the way. Yesterday driving home from work it misfired again for about a minute and then was fine. No codes at all on the scanner however it is time for another tune up. My other problem is that my exhaust is leaking where the ypipe connects to the manifolds and i think my cats are plugged (original). Thinking about replacing with headers and a ypipe with no cats (way cheaper). What are your opinions about deleting cats? Cant get any worse mpg than i already do and im not concerned with the cel. Just concerned about how the truck will run. Thanks!
