Thinking, supercrew with 6.5 box project
Thinking, supercrew with 6.5 box project
owner of a 03 supercab, back when i bought it, i was not thinking family. but times have changed and well the old supercab just is getting annoying.
this is a crazzy project i was just thinking about, since ford only just came out with a f150 supercrew 6.5 just a few years ago, not many out their. so i was just out looking at my truck (supercab) and next to it a supercrew, from the same year 2003.
what would it take to lengthening out the frame, move the axle back, and longer drive shaft, break/fuel lines, and tail light electrical, and on top of that all a 6.5 box.? a 2003 supercrew with a 6.5 box.
I think moving the axle back is the most time consuming. just have to find reference points that can be used to locate the axle before its all removed (spring parches, shock mounts) and the after, to line everything up, and make square again. just finding a doner frame, and cutting it with the extra few inches , then welding the frames together. (im a heavy metal welder by trade, Manitowoc Cranes.) would be the easy way to do it.
what are your guys thoughts??? im in the same hole everyone else is in, money is tight, paying the mortgage is first then everything else. so going to the bank and asking for money for a newer truck, lol. but i keep dreaming and thinking, thats whats keeps me going.

I am no expert by any means but, it seems to me just off the top of my head, why not buy a super crew with possibly a blown motor and use its frame to stretch the frame in your truck and then swap cabs. I just watched an episode of Stacy David's Gears where they shortened a truck frame to put a short bed on. He said the best place to do it was under the cab. Now his project was a 70's chevy so your truck may be different, but if you just stretch the frame under your cab, that will save you a lot of hassle. Then you wont have to relocate your axle, just stretch the break and fuel lines and wiring harness along with your drive shaft
Like i said i am no expert, but that is where i would at least start looking.

I have mulled over this project idea for 2 years now, i even made up a mock picture of what my truck would look like had i done the project.
My guess would to be just lengthen the frame after the cab, a foot. no need to relocate axle or anything just the length of the frame, and of course as you said, a custom drive shaft would be needed, and longer break lines. thats about it, extended the electrical is all easy things to get done. it's not that hard, just time consuming and everything must be properly aligned, and welded perfectly.

I am not sure how much help this would be to you but maybe worth a shot. A company named Precision Bodyline has made a name for themselves by putting a long bed on a crew cab. Mostly Dodge Megacabs and Toyota MaxCrews but you could probably ask egeneral questions as to what would be involved. Worth a shot I guess website is http://longbedmytruck.com/index.html
VERY cool idea by the way. I have thought about this for a long while. I bought a Screw because I have a family and a supercab just wasnt big enough. I dont have a need for a 3/4 ton gas or diesel. But I do have a need for a truck and being on a budget an 01-03 Screw was the answer. Unfortunately losing a foot of bed makes things complicated. Definitely interested in seeing how this turns out for you. If you do decide to do it please take lots of pics and do a complete write up so that others may be able to do this as well. We cant be the only 2 out there who have thought about it.
That would be easiest^. Them you just have to fab up some body mounts. Pretty sure it's been done on here before, might wanna try searching for it.

I have been tinkering over this idea myself since I traded for my screw last fall... been hoping to get rear ended so that I could have the Body shop weld up a 6.5 bed/frame behind the cab. I really hate the small box thats even smaller after my tool box. I picked up a bed extender on CL to get by for now, but would really like to have the bigger box and WIDER tailgate!
That's definitely the way should have looked from the factory! Might have to talk to local body shop to see what it'd cost to do... going back and forth between keeping mine and doing this or buying a new 5.0 157"
