98 Pawl Probs

Let me start by saying I have searched all over to find a related post but cannot. If there is one I will gladly accept being pointed in the proper direction.

So, when I put the truck in Park it often continues to roll forward or backwards a foot or more before the pawl starts clacking and then finally engages. I usually ease on the brakes to slow it down until it does catch. Sometimes I think it has engaged when it hasn't and from outside the truck I push the truck forward or back until it does. Another "usually"... I usually use the parking brake first but I have had some issues arise with it and have not been able to get it fixed.

Is there some sort of adjustment or repair I can feasibly make at home or I am destined for a shady tranny shop so they can remove the trans and make a repair?? No one around has a shop they would even recommend so I would enjoy a home remedy.

Side not: I only park in a flat parking lot at work and flat driveway at home so it is not like there is a lot of pressure on things that should have led to this problem. Anyway, what are some reasonable options... if any
Thank you

Has your transmission been rough? If not I'd say just use the parking brake...

Check to make sure the cable is not loose uner the dash where it meets the shift lever. There are two bolts there that tend to back out

Yea, somethings out of adjustment. Sounds like to me anyway. Look thru here, -

Even if it's not the pointer, there's other info as the thread moves along.

BTW- Consider yourself lucky if the PB works like it should in a 98.

Almost forgot, - TRS. It's right on the side of the trans and they are adjustable. Make sure those bolts didn't come loose and I wouldn't drive until you figure this one out. You know what may happen lol.

Trans Range Sensor by the way.

It doesn't... at all
Will probably invest in that first if it is cheaper than trans repair...

Thank you all for the rapid responses
Checked everything under dash during lunch and it all looks good. Didn't see post about TRS until now so will check under truck after work or tomorrow at lunch. Thanks again

Another note, not that I know much about trans and what not, but this seems like it may fix the problem of sometimes having to drop it into Neutral to start it?.?.? Maybe a TRS adjustment will help both and keep the shop out of my wallet.

The TRS is also the neutral safety switch.

It turns out that this was the issue. All I needed was someone smaller and more flexible to get down there and we knocked it out in just a few minutes... went ahead and adjusted the pointer too. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

Yeah, you turn that whole deal by hand until you notice your reverse lights light up. Then you tighten it down. There's also another cable connection somewhere. I was just looking at the pawl in the column yesterday in a 99 and swear I seen a cable adjustment.

Having to drop it neutral to start, - yea, your out of adjustment is all. I can give you detailed instructions if you don't have them.
