1999 Won't Start at Times

Three times in the past two weeks my F150 has not started. In each case I had driven it several miles, turned it off for just a few minutes to go into a store, and when I tried to start it, it would not start. The engine turned over fast, so it's not a battery issue. I am not a mechanic, but I would say it seemed to be getting no gas. Each time I let set for 15 minutes or so and it cranked right up. Could this possibly be my fuel pump? Any other suggestions as to what the problem could be?

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

It could be a sticky injector, causing flooding. Will it start if you hold the gas pedal on the floor?

My guess your fuel pump is getting ready to quit. If you can, have someone bang on the fuel tank while it's turning over with a mallet, or the like, when it won't start.

Thanks!

I have had the truck since it had 108K miles on it. It now has 154K on it. I have never changed the fuel filter. If I had that done, is there an additive I can put in the gas tank that may help clean the injectors?

I sure hope it is not the fuel pump. I have checked out a couple of websites and am seeing that replacement cost is rather expensive due to labor cost. Maybe if I replace the filter and try to clean the injectors I might luck out and not have to replace the fuel pump.

I will do that!

After I replace the filter and clean the injectors, if it acts up again I will try the rubber mallet on the gas tank. Thanks!

I have not tried holding the gas pedal to the floor when it won't start. I was afraid that might flood it. But I am willing to try the next time. Thanks!

Pressing it to the floor turns OFF the injectors to help CLEAR a flood.

The best additive is Techron.

You can borrow/rent a fuel pressure tester from parts stores to see what kind of pressure the fuel pump is putting out. There's a Schrader valve on the fuel rail.
