Gas Smell in Garage???????????

I have a 1999 F-150 and the last 2 times i filled up at the gas station and park my truck in the garage i can smell gas. It's not until i start to use my truck and use some gas that the fume smell goes away. I have no leaks or drips on the floor and my gas cap is tight.

Has anyone else experienced this or have a clue as to the problem?

Yea, that's the over flow or vent tube most likely. The piping that runs along side of the filler neck.

Other than that, could be leaking under the fuel straps. Have you taken the truck in? Was the straps replaced. That model year was recalled, -you should of received a letter.

i was thinking fuel tank straps myself. Crawl under there and check em out. if you see any leaking, you need a new tank and straps replaced. dealer will pay for straps, not tanks.

I was getting a fuel smell from my '00 F150. The PO had taken it in for the tank strap recall, but didn't replace the tank... it was VERY rusty. It didn't have any holes, but the metal was so thin the fuel was simply soaking right through and much of the tank was wet. Here's a pic.

That wasn't all I found either... the filler neck (the metal tube) was also rusted where the hose clamps on... needed to replace both the tank and the filler tube. Not fun or cheap. Also check the metal tube that runs from the tank vent, along the inside driver side frame rail and up to the engine... mine was pretty rusty but not rusted through, so I painted some POR15 on the whole length to buy me some time before I have to replace it aslo.
