My new project

No, it's not an F150, but i towed it home with my V10 F150, so that makes it relevant.

It's a 72 Mustang convertible, 302 auto. I plan on a newer 5.0 EFI setup with an AOD. The title shows 10,000 original miles - but I have a hard time believing it.

I know the 71-73 are not too popular with most, but it happens to be my favorite - only if convertible with the hood scoops. If anyone has a cheap 5.0 donor car available around AZ, let me know

Comments, suggestions?

never been a fan of convertibles, but to all their own i guess. Why would you want an AOD? why not a c-6? more likely to withstand a beating! An efi setup in my opionon is a challenge! You keeping most emissions? or are you gonna just use it for the power benifets with the fuel injection and get rid off all the EGR, Smog, and all that fun stuff? looks to be an interesting project! keep us posted even though we are a truck site!

I was thinking AOD because this car will not be taking a beating. It's a low power cruiser. The 5.0 will come from a donor car which I assume will have an AOD, so everything will be compatible. I'll get rid of smog where it makes sense. I'm going EFI for the reliability and driveability of it.

Will update when I get started.

You stuff a V10 in your 1/2 ton and you want a "low power cruiser" muscle car.

I would embrace the go big or go home attitude and stuff some horse power in that Mustang. A big block would be fun.

A proper carb setup will be reliable and driveable too unless you plan on the car sitting for long periods of time. Carb's aren't as awful as people make them out to be.

Nice garage by the way. I'm a vintage Jap bike collector too, though pre-1980 emissions restrictions so a little older. Used to be strictly Honda, but recently bought a Kawa project and have become a fan of them as well.

Well... I'm building this for my Step-Father. He has no mechanical aptitude and I need it to be as user friendly as possible - thus the EFI setup. He is scared to death of my Lexus, so I can't imagine him with a big block.

If he wills the car to me - that will be a different story!

This won't be a daily driver and when it is driven will likely go from 2000 feet to 9000 feet, so EFI is a much better option for it. I'm also hoping with a donor car I might be able to get disc brakes out of it.

Thanks for the compliments on my 2 wheel collection!

I've got a 76 Goldwing (back when it was actually a cruiser) and cleaning and synching those carbs is enough to turn even the most devout carb guy into an EFI convert.

With that altitude and building it for someone else, that's probably the best route to go. I don't know if its an issue on that car, but I've got a 3rd gen F100 and guys get crazy with the motor swaps and wind up having the brace the frame, upgrade suspension, and swap out drums for discs. If they do it right....a lot don't!

I now have a donor car. 89 Lincoln Town Car 5.0 with 80k. $600 for the car. Runs great, moves under its own power. It just has a popped a freeze plug.

I was gonna say save up and do a Coyote swap but too late haha.

But I do say skip the AOD and do a 4R70W or something different. Or as stated a C6 if you are wanting to keep the tranny mechanical and not electronic.

Good luck and most importantly have fun!
