Hello ,
I just received a F 150 lariat 4.6L 4X4 Today 160000 miles for almost nothing... I do all my own work usually and had a couple questions that u all could prob help with... It starts right up has a hell of a tick witch sounds like exhuast mani ? And seems to be misfire and not running on all 8,, so i popped hood and wow.. Never dealt with plugs like this, Do i need a special tool or can it be done.. Truck has sat for awhile, New oil and filters.. Any thoughts comments are very much appreciated... Thanks DP

I have a '97 5.4. On it you have to remove the coil pack on each cylinder first, then you'll need a long extension to get to the plugs. 4.6 should be the same way, not sure though. On mine there's not much room to work.
Motorcraft plugs are recommended. Do not use anti-seize, keep them dry. Also like 1997 lariat 4.6 said make sure you torque them to 28 ft/lbs.
You could also clean the MAF sensor and throttle body while your in there. When I cleaned my TB at 75k it was filthy on the backside.

Re:
I would suggest changing the wires in addition. I changed out the plugs and still kept misfiring, and changed out the wires then ran without misfiring.
Also, since I have a 4.6 I would use antiseize compound, becuase when I removed my plugs they were so tight that I thought I was going to snap the plug in two. I ended up using an spark plug socket, extension and ratchet duct taped, so I wouldnt lose the socket. Worked good and didnt have to buy any special ratchet.

Maybe this changes things plug wise
I put so much effort into trying to get it running right never looked at v.i.n or title... Its a 1998 4.6 lariat 4x4 i dont see what i call plug wires. There are thes plastic looking blocks with wires 3 or 4 strands each of what looks like a size 12 or 14 gauge with metal rods connecting them..

You desperately need a manual. Even a Chilton or Haynes would help you out. I suggest you get something in that order. Like a Ford DVD on ebay. Those are the best and they're fairly cheep. You got the truck for practically nothing right? You way ahead.
Plugs r Done but need thoughts
Yea i feel dumb i got the plugs changed, and changed power steering pump while everything was off, Because of a loud squeal, and the pully on it had a lot of play. However, got all back in runs fantastic except squeal, i checked the tensioner, alternator ,waterpump ,pullie etc... Any thoughts havent had an older truck in a long time, i do know what a plug wire is, however, i guess i have not worked on an engine like this with the plugs inside the intake... Any thoughts on the squeal?
