Partially Convert '03 XL to XLT, am I crazy?

Greetings all - first post... 5th Ford Truck, but 1st F150.

Just bought an '03 XL that I'd like to have power windows and door locks on. Truck already has cruise/tilt, so this is probably as far as I'll want to go on the creature comforts. Is it as simple as finding a few donor door panels, window frames/motors, lock actuators? Or will I need to put in a new wiring harness?

Also, where is the auto mirror controller - dash or door panel? Suppose I'd want to have auto mirrors if the control is door mounted.

Thanks in advance - having fun digging through all the good info here!

A buddy of mine did this on his 03 STX XL, he said he had to get the harnesses, door panels, actuators and arms out of a junkyard truck.

Mirrors are on the door panel where the power locks and windows are at

Excellent - thanks for the replies! My major concern is the harness... am I looking at replacing the entire wiring harness, or just "bundles" that run to each door and are relatively easily identified if I went poking around a donor?

Wiring should already be there, ford generally just wired them all up the same.

You might find it cheaper to get the whole doors.

I'm not sure an XL harness has bundles to work with to plug in. I doubt it, really.

I wanted to just plug in turn signal mirrors, but of course the doors aren't wired for anything beyond speakers. If I wanted an XLT dash harness, that was $240, if I so chose...

You will probably have to get an aftermarket kit and cobble up an aux fuse panel to deal with that part. Pick the parts off of some XLT doors or use them if they are the same color and go from there.

So will I need to get the GEM from the donor truck? If so, I'm worried about other XLT goodies that I might not be converting to that will end up throwing codes or malfunctioning.

Things that come to mind that I won't be upgrading:
XLT power seats (connector may be different and airbags may not work?)
Power 4WD (is this on the dash of an XLT?)
Gauges? I don't have a tach...

Well I cant speak for all xlt's but my 01 xlt did not come with power seats. The 4x4 is shift on the fly on the dash right next to the ac controls. My xlt does have a tach. Not sure how much this helps.

start with the exterior first. Bumpers, grille, mirrors, etc. Manual windows are actually really dependable, I would keep them.
