I need help please. I got a 2001 ford f150 4x4 4.6L v8 truck in great condition from a friend. He needed money bad and was about to call a scrap yard and prob get $200 for his truck. It's in great shape but he in no shape to have it repaired. When I start truck it knocks, he says it needs motor I wanted to ask if anybody could give me ideas on what problem maybe. Also what motor can I put in truck other than exact 2001 ford f150 trinton 4.6l v8, now I'm not machanic and don't mean I wanna change size of motor just asken if a differnt year or even different vehicle motor would fit. Example a 1999 ford crown Vic with same 4.6 v8, I want to get a motor that will bolt right up and not have to mod anything,if anybody can list years and models of vehicles motors that will fit so I can try find a decient used motor, we were wrecked by hurrican sandy bad barly have a place to live so I'm atleast trying to repair truck as cheap as possible but want it to b a good long lasting truck, it's about only thing we have left that's fixable. All replys are appreciated very much.

 

Any Vin code W 4.6L 2v from '01 or later should work. Just use your accessories on your current motor as some of that changed on newer model trucks. Block and heads are same.

 

Right, 01-04 for the 4six truck engine. Vic engines will work as long as they're PI engines and you use your existing truck intake. Vics engines have car intakes. Make sure the Vic engine is PI. I'm not sure if Vic engines were anything but. If I had to guess, Vic engines for all model years were PI, since they were used for the interceptors,- police vehicles. I'm not positive on that, would have to visit a car forum or look it up.

You can also use ANY F150 5.4L engine from 99 -03 with little modification. Lengthening a few wires is all. 5fours are choice for vehicle weight and in higher demand, so you'll pay more for one. The 4six PCM will operate the 5four close to perfect. A 5four tune would better of course.
