Odd engine rev question

I have 2003 F150 4.6 V8 and had the check engine light on. Pulled the code and it was a low coolant temp warning. I replaced the thermostat which was stuck open and that solved that issue. Now though when I pull up to a red light or even parked in the driveway the engine revs between 500-1500RPM. It seems to do it when the heater is on but the other day I turned off the heat and same thing. Any thoughtson what this could be?

House cleaning time.

Clean the Throttle body
Clean the MAF
Clean/replace the IAC
Clean the EGR Ports

There are DIY's for all of those jobs. The other thing could be that you left something off when you reassembled after the t-stat.

Good luck.

My sons Mustang GT started started to idle erratic and coming to a stop would drop the RPMs down to where it would stall or surge to high RPMs. We tried to clean the IAC with cleaner but in the end we replaced it with one from Advance Auto and he hasn't had a problem since. His just wasnt reading right and cleaning carbon and the like out did not help but was a cheaper fix if it had...
Like jgger said its probably cleaning time. I would clean this as well as your throttle body first then EGR and see what happens. A can of cleaner or two is cheaper than just throwing parts at it to see if it one of the mentioned ones. Good luck and keep us posted on what you find. It also could be a line off or disconnected from last repair as mentioned.

When you do the EGR ports you must remove the throttle body. BTW this is also the BEST way to clean the T/B any way.

I replaced the IAC valve a year ago to fix a similar issue...but i will try to clean everything real good and see if that helps because yes throwing parts at it can add up $$$ i dont have. Thanks for the tips.

Spent today cleaning everything and still same issue. Going to go to AutoZone to replace the IAC that is still under warranty and see if that fixes it. Im going to assume it will run a lot better once I solve the idle rev problem since the throttle body was caked with gunk.

What temp thermostat did you replace it with???? The coolant temp can also cause the rev problem too.
